As many people will be aware that in the last few months there have been three sexual assaults on the Clifton Downs in Bristol. Ask around and you’ll soon hear more tales, anecdotes, and warnings that the downs have never been a safe space at night, and now the day either. Women are being warned to ‘take precautions’ when going there. This is unacceptable! The downs is a public space; we should all have the right to feel safe there day and night! Whether you are out for a jog, short cutting home after a night out, or anything else.
The coverage of these attacks has focused on how women can maintain their safety by adapting their behaviour. No discussion of the perpetrator. This is unacceptable!
We have an unfortunate tradition of focusing on how women are responsible for not getting raped instead of focusing on rapists not raping. But we also have a tradition of standing up and reclaiming our spaces! So on Thursday night we will we march, as so many women have done before us to say that we are NEVER to blame for rape and male violence. Those men who choose to commit these crimes are to blame. We will march to demand our right to live without the fear or reality of rape and male violence, we demand an end to male violence against women. We will march in solidarity with the survivors of sexual violence.
